Education
Kings Barton

A new education building for Peter Symonds College at the heart of Kings Barton, Winchester

Project description

The Office / Education Building sits at the heart of the Neighbourhood Centre addressing The Avenue, The Place and The Space. The building is three storeys high with a raised roof to its North Elevation. It addresses the level change over the site by resting on a plinth. The building is predominantly cloaked in buff brick with rhythmical punched openings.

The East Elevation of the building presents a dominant approach and character, created by open columns that help establish itself as a ‘special’ building as well as to create a covered walkway along The Avenue. The North Elevation provides an active frontage to The Square, with primary entrance and a cafe located here. A chamfer on the North West Corner of the building orientates internal views towards The Park and beyond as well as improving the proportions of the primary corner elevation that fronts vehicles moving south down The Avenue.

Challenges we overcame:

We were faced with the challenge of delivering a commercially viable scheme of different uses within a very ambitious 10-week timescale. The key to successful delivery was collaborative working on the design. Highly efficient project systems allowing fast design development, review and sign-off. The proposal was delivered to a high quality on time and our client was delighted with the result.
