What is a Sky Deck?
The Snug Sky Deck is a visionary proposal to transform the existing Itchen Bridge in Southampton into a a striking new landmark that celebrates the city's connection to the water. Inspired by the world's greatest waterfronts and Southamptons connection to the cruise industry, the project creates a dynamic new public space elevated high above the city. The Sky Deck will give visitors and residents the experience of standing on the deck of a cruise liner with panoramic views across the cities waterfront.

Re-branding the city's waterfront
Great cities have iconic waterfronts, often defined by their innovative public spaces. The Snug Sky Deck cantilevers dramatically off the existing bridge, allowing people to stand out over the water enjoying impressive views of the city and its waterfront. This dynamic structure will cost effectively utilise technologies available in the local marine industry to create a much needed and unique new landmark for the city of Southampton.

A symbiotic public space
The Snug Sky Deck appears to grow organically from its host, forming a symbiotic dialogue between its host structure and a new public space. This will efficiently unlock the latent potential of this otherwise utilitarian bridge, enhancing the image of the bridge and leveraging its structural redundancy.
Snug's innovative Sky Deck can be applied to almost any existing host structure, transforming otherwise utilitarian structures into an iconic public space.
The Sky Deck is intended to provide a flexible public space that encourages people to pause and enjoy the elevated position offered by existing bridge structures, without requiring people to block existing, often limited pavement space. Illustrated below, the Sky Deck provides a place for football fans to gather on match day and celebrate their team's success.

The Sky Deck is a concept developed by Snug Architects as a cost effective product for any city or town to quickly deliver a transformative waterfront pocket park. We have developed the concept as a catalyst for wider regeneration, allowing councils to deliver an early win as part of a wider strategic regeneration programme.
