A new masterplan for the future of the charities residential centre on the Isle of Wight

We were commissioned by Urban Saints to prepare a visionary masterplan for the future of their residential centre. Urban Saints Westbrook Centre is set in 18 acres of beautiful woodland near Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It is a superb residential venue for youth, student, church and school groups, as well as for day conferences, parties and activity days. Our task was to make it even better.

The historic Westbrook House sits at the centre of the site and is enclosed by mature woodland. he proposal was derived from a comprehensive analysis of the site constraints and opportunities.

The initial masterplan transformed the historic house into a new conference and training centre, adding new dining facilities and a refurbished hall. Improved parking and safer drop off areas as well as increased overnight accommodation facilities enhanced the existing provision. Within the landscape a host of new activities, including a climbing wall are proposed. Finally new lodges are proposed within a secluded corner of the site providing flexible family accommodation.

The initial vision

Following a process of engagement with the charity and key stakeholders, including Pre-Planning Engagement with IOW Council, a more refined masterplan was developed. This included; Westbrook House Hotel and Conference Centre (A+K), Enhanced capacity for Access Parking and Drop off (B), new Hub facilities including dining hall and gymnasium (A+D), a new Sports Hall with climbing wall (C), a substantial new Accommodation Block (E) as well as two staff houses (J), lodges (L) and improved campsite facilities (F).
